A nice Monday in Cambodia

I MET THE COOLEST PERSON

Ok picture this. it’s last Monday, Bernadette, Ashley, and I are leaving a boba shop to take Ashley home before Bern and I have our one on one time. We’re looking for a tuk tuk and the ride share app we normally use keeps canceling our order due to the water festival going on this week. We look to the left and see a man with a tuk tuk. We walk over and bern starts to tell him where we need to go, he very quickly stops her a put his phone in her hand. (This is normal for tuk tuk drivers who don’t speak much english) ANYWAY, turns out, this man is deaf! When we realized that I got so excited, I actually know a little bit of sign language. Although I only know american sign language, he knew it too! So we booked our tuk tuk and we were on the way home. When we got home, Ashley hopped out and Bernadette went to put something in the house, it was just just me and the driver now. He asked me if we needed to go anywhere else in the next few days and I told him that Bern and I actually needed to go somewhere as soon as she got back outside. As we waited for Bernadette I learned his name and we talked for a bit. Bernadette came back outside and he headed off to our second location, he dropped us off and signed to me that he loved us and I showed him how to do the sign for “I really love you.” It was the coolest thing that’s happened here in Cambodia! I don’t typically meet deaf people and I never thought I’d meet a deaf person on the other side of the world! But I am so thankful to God for giving me a love of sign language so that I might speak to people that most can’t.
